Cant wait to see them live here in NY soon. Is no one gonna talk about jack black. Is anyone else disappointed that there's not a Gorillaz video game. I really don't understand the negativity towards this fun sendoff. A documentary can be a number of things, and some people will expect them to be a certain way. This was never meant to be some monumental film for Gorillaz, rather it is a celebration of the last two albums and their accompanying world tour. It gave me a renewed appreciation for Humanz, with a closer look at its initial production. I even listened to all of The Now Now after this, my summer 2018 soundtrack. Everybody that worked on these projects and performed together all seemed to be like a big family. The talented people that made these albums possible are featured. Damon and Jamie were really funny, too. You get to see some interesting behind the scenes action at the making of the music, and even for Jamie's sketches that would become official artwork for the band. While the title Reject False Icons does not really relate to the mantra/idea from Demon Days, the festival in LA looked amazing. I guess that some expected much more from the Gorillaz brand in a weird way. Denholm's Director's Cut was uploaded onto YouTube in three parts, which was a nice gift at the end of the year for the niche fan base. A part of his style was to have most of the film in black and white, with the concerts being in color to show off the light show of the stages and energy of the performers. While not groundbreaking in any way, this will appeal much more to Gorillaz fans such as myself.

Una prova d'attore notevole per Adam Sandler, nel nuovo film dei talentuosi registi di Good Time La vita è tutto un gioco all'accumulo della tensione, della pressione, che poi infine esplode per generare cose bellissime o terribili. Sembrano voler dire questo i registi Benny e Josh Safdie, che tornano dopo l'ottimo Good Time con un film stilisticamente e narrativamente molto simile – una corsa contro il tempo caotica per le strade di New York – retto dalla magnetica performance di un Adam Sandler in gran forma. Diamanti grezzi, in arrivo il 31 gennaio su Netflix, è l'odissea di Howard Ratner, proprietario di un negozio di gioielli con i creditori alle calcagna e un istinto per le scommesse che sfora nell'autodistruttivo. Quando un prezioso opale nero gli viene recapitato, sembra che per lui finalmente sia arrivato il colpo grosso che gli permetterà di riscattarsi. I dialoghi tendono al realismo, si intersecano e sovrappongono e, a volte, è difficile stare dietro a tutto ciò che accade. Questo per lo meno nell'atto iniziale, perché poi, quando il ritmo diventa incalzante, il film diventa più lineare e si avvia verso un crescendo esaltante e devastante allo stesso tempo. Il padre dei registi lavorava nel Diamond District di Manhattan. Ma, a parte i presupposti personali che hanno spinto i Safdie a scrivere il film, per il resto Diamanti grezzi assume da subito la portata di una parabola universale. Non è tanto un film sull'avidità, come si potrebbe pensare dato il contesto, quanto sull'innato bisogno degli esseri umani di trovare una sfida adeguata che dia loro la forza di proseguire. A volte questo istinto può portare all'eccesso, come nel caso di Howard Ratner. Diamanti grezzi è dunque anche un film sulla dipendenza dal gioco: Howard non smette mai di scommettere, anche quando vince. Anzi, una vittoria per lui è solo un risultato su cui investire ulteriormente, alla ricerca costante dell'adrenalina che deriva dalla consapevolezza di aver battuto le probabilità. Torniamo così al titolo: Diamanti grezzi. Non è precisissimo, perché la pietra attorno a cui ruota il film non è un diamante, ma un opale nero. L'originale è in effetti il più generico Uncut Gems. Ma rende comunque l'idea della metafora che sottende l'intero film: ci sono riferimenti costanti alla pressione, al punto di rottura. I diamanti si formano in seguito a milioni di anni di altissima pressione, che infine generano qualcosa di bellissimo. Ma il punto di rottura, il momento in cui la tensione esplode, può portare anche a risultati terribili. Eppure l'esaltazione che si prova nell'attesa, quando ancora i giochi non sono fatti e tutto è possibile, il bene e il male, la vittoria e la sconfitta, è tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno.   In mezzo a tutto questo, Adam Sandler si muove con l'abilità del consumato showman, anche perché il suo personaggio, un commerciante dalla parlantina che ti stordisce e conquista, lo richiede. È un personaggio dalle mille sfumature – come un opale! – pieno di difetti, che fa scelte difficilmente condivisibili, che non riesce a smettere di sbagliare. Eppure è anche imprevedibilmente generoso, ha una strana fiducia verso il prossimo e affetto verso i suoi cari. E i Safdie gli stanno talmente incollati da farci entrare nella sua testa fino a capirlo, e nel finale è impossibile non parteggiare per lui e festeggiare con lui. Trama [ modifica, modifica wikitesto] Nel 2012, dopo aver corrotto con 100mila dollari due minatori falascia sottopagati, il gioielliere ebreo newyorkese Howard Ratner mette le mani su un opale nero allo stato grezzo contrabbandato dall' Etiopia. Avendo stimato il suo valore attorno a un milione di dollari, ha intenzione di metterlo all' asta per saldare il debito di 100mila dollari che ha col cognato Arno. Howard infatti è uno scommettitore incallito, la cui continua ricerca di puntate sempre più rischiose condiziona una vita già di per sé complicata; in procinto di divorziare dalla moglie con cui ha tre figli, ha una relazione segreta con la sua dipendente Julia, che sfrutta la cosa per non presentarsi quasi mai a lavoro, avendo passato la notte a fare festa; inoltre, uno spazientito Arno gli ha messo alle calcagna Phil e Nico, due personaggi legati al mondo della malavita. In negozio, Howard riceve la visita del cestista dei Boston Celtics Kevin Garnett, presentatogli da Demany, uno smerciatore che procaccia ad Howard la sempre più rada clientela. Per risvegliare l'interesse dello sportivo, Howard gli mostra la pietra: Garnett si convince immediatamente che abbia dei poteri magici e gli chiede di prestargliela, sicuro che grazie ad essa vincerà la partita di quella sera contro i Philadelphia 76ers, con la promessa di restituirgliela il giorno dopo. Quest'ultimo accetta, riluttante, e riceve in cambio l'anello da campione NBA dell'altro, che impegna per scommettere sulla vittoria dei Celtics e la prestazione di Garnett. La scommessa si rivela un successo su tutta la linea grazie all'influsso scaramantico della pietra, facendo credere ad Howard di essere già in grado di saldare il debito. Alla recita scolastica di sua figlia, Howard viene rapito dagli scagnozzi di Arno, che lo picchiano e lo chiudono nudo del bagagliaio della sua auto, mentre il cognato lo informa di aver annullato la scommessa sul nascere, essendo stata fatta con dei soldi che gli doveva. A complicare la situazione contribuiscono Garnett e Demany, che non sembrano intenzionati a rendergli l'opale: fallito un primo tentativo di riaverlo e con la casa d'aste col fiato sul collo, Howard rintraccia Demany a un concerto di The Weeknd, ma viene scacciato in malo modo. Al concerto, Howard riconosce anche Julia, appartatasi in un bagno del locale con il cantante, e decide di lasciarla dopo una furiosa litigata. La sera successiva, partecipa alle celebrazioni della Pasqua ebraica con la sua famiglia, fra cui Arno, che viene a sapere della pietra e dell'asta; Howard chiede alla moglie un'altra chance come coppia, ma lei lo respinge deridendolo. Il giorno dopo, Garnett si presenta con Demany al negozio di Howard, intenzionato ad acquistare la pietra per 175mila dollari, ma Howard rifiuta, invitandolo a partecipare all'asta. Recatosi in extremis alla casa d'aste a consegnare la pietra, Howard scopre che il suo valore di base è stato abbassato notevolmente dalla perizia di un altro gemmologo e che ora è pari a "soli" 150-200mila dollari. Chiede quindi al suocero Gooey di fare offerte al rialzo, sicuro che Garnett cercherà comunque di superarlo: arrivati a 190mila dollari, il maldestro tentativo gli si ritorce contro quando il cestista si ritira e Gooey si aggiudica nolente la pietra. Howard promette al suocero di restituirgli i soldi non appena gli verranno bonificati, più quanto perso nella transazione di tasca propria. Credendo che Howard l'abbia preso di nuovo in giro, Arno lo fa picchiare da Phil e Nico e gli dà un ultimatum a breve scadenza per saldare il debito. In negozio, un disperato Howard viene consolato da Julia, con cui riallaccia i rapporti, e riesce a vendere la pietra a Garnett per 175mila dollari in contanti. Avverte Arno di avere finalmente con sé la sudata somma, ma, spinto dal proprio spirito competitivo a non uscire da tutta la faccenda con così poco, decide di puntarli tutti su Garnett e sulla vittoria dei Celtics quella sera contro la sua squadra del cuore, i New York Knicks: consegna quindi la somma a Julia, che corre a piazzare la puntata in un centro scommesse. Arno si presenta in negozio con Phil e Nico, ma Howard, consapevole che cercherebbero nuovamente di annullare la scommessa o peggio, riesce a intrappolarli nella doppia porta a vetri antiproiettile della gioielleria. Julia e Howard seguono trepidanti l'andamento della partita, quest'ultimo sotto lo sguardo via via sempre meno scettico dei tre prigionieri, che si conclude con la vittoria dei Celtics grazie a una spettacolare prestazione di Garnett: euforico per aver vinto oltre un milione di dollari, Howard libera il cognato, anch'esso visibilmente sollevato dalla vittoria, ma viene immediatamente ucciso da Phil con un colpo a bruciapelo. Quest'ultimo uccide anche uno scioccato Arno e inizia a svaligiare la gioielleria assieme a Nico, mentre Julia si allontana ignara dal centro scommesse con la vincita. Produzione [ modifica, modifica wikitesto] Il film originariamente avrebbe dovuto fare seguito al lungometraggio di debutto dei fratelli Safdie, Daddy Longlegs, del 2009. [1] I due hanno scritto la sceneggiatura assieme a Ronald Bronstein, che aveva fatto da protagonista in Daddy Longlegs e che sarebbe divenuto poi un loro abituale collaboratore artistico, ispirandosi inizialmente alle storie che loro padre gli raccontava da piccoli sulla sua esperienza di lavoro nel Diamond District di Manhattan. Άκοπο ΔιÎμάντin a new. Howard Ratner (played by improv over-loader and live-in caricature Adam Sandler) is a bungling jeweler, a trying BS-er, and an addictive gambler. He gets in way over his head making risky bets in order to finally get that big score. That's the gist of the inflamed and black-eyed Uncut Gems. It's my latest review.
Yup, I am announcing "Gems" as one of 2019's best and most exhaustive films. After seeing it on Xmas day, I am sure I will never view anything quite like it again. Remember Mark Wahlberg's Jim Bennett from The Gambler or Matthew McConaughey's Brandon Lang from Two for the Money? Well Sandler's Howard makes these dudes look like Romper Room in comparison.
Directed by two thirty-year-old brothers (Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie) filmed chiefly in close-ups, featuring some weird colonoscopy imagery, and co-starring former NBA great Kevin Garnett (that's some brilliant casting there) Uncut Gems is the cinematic equivalent of pure cocaine mixed with high-grade angel dust.
Josh and Benny Safdie fashion "Gems" as a sloppy character study and New York minute minutia that still seems to work. The dialogue is raw and massively ad-libitum, there are enough F-words to make Tarantino blush, the camerawork is whizzing, and Sandler lets you know that he's light years away from his blundering, Bobby Boucher shtick.
So yeah, Sandler's Ratner is an unlikable and turgidly reckless persona. And yes, Gems" is so mean-spirited, so 80's synth happy, and so insouciant it dares you to despise it. Still, Uncut Gems enthralls you provided you dig a little Martin Scorsese or Oliver Stone on steroids. This thing is a live by the bet, die by the bet train wreck of a movie. All aboard but if you're gonna throw up, be sure to roll down a window. Rating: 3 and a half stars.

Incallito giocatore d'azzardo, marito e padre di famiglia con villa nei sobborghi, adultero con l'amante in città, Howard vive perennemente braccato dai debitori, in particolare dal cognato affiliato alla mafia italoamericana. Maneggione e bugiardo, ripone le sue speranze in un opale proveniente dall'Etiopia: ma qualche giorno prima dell'asta che dovrebbe fruttargli una somma milionaria, si fa convincere dal giocatore di basket Kevin Garnett, venuto in visita al suo negozio, a scambiare la pietra con un anello, dando così inizio a una serie infinita di traffici che segneranno il suo destino. I fratelli Josh e Ben Safdie s'immergono con il loro cinema adrenalinico nella tragedia di un uomo ridicolo e raccontano con spietato senso del grottesco una New York spaventosa, nascosta dietro le facciate dei grattacieli e famelica di denaro. C'è qualcosa che ricorda i personaggi di Ernest Hemingway nel Howard Ratner di Uncut Gems: un'estasi che nasce dall'umiliazione, una compassione che emerge oltre la riprovazione morale, una dimensione eroica riconosciuta a chi fa di tutto - pur sbagliando tutto - per sopravvivere agli altri e a se stesso, ai propri vizi e alle proprie tentazioni. Howard Ratner è come Francis Macomber, la sua è una vita altrettanto breve ma a suo modo felice. E Adam Sandler che gli presta il suo fisico inappropriato e nervoso, con una protesi di denti sporgenti e un'origine ebraica ingombrante (negli obblighi familiari, nel retaggio di una tradizione di commercianti) un interprete perfetto. A quanti vent'anni da Ubriaco d'amore, i fratelli Safdie hanno finalmente riscoperto il volto disperato dal comico americano, la fragilità del suo sorriso, l'incoscienza dei suoi azzardi, la stupidità dei suoi ragionamenti. Braccato dalla macchina da presa del direttore della fotografia Darius Khondji, filmato in campo lungo dentro una città caotica, Sandler si muove tra le strade, le auto, gli uffici, le case di New York come un re del sottobosco metropolitano, eccessivo, pasticcione e incosciente. Come sempre nel cinema dei Safdie (qui ancora affiancati alla sceneggiatura da Ronald Bronstein) al realismo estremo dello stile si affianca un elemento grottesco e quasi comico, qui evidente in certe situazioni (il rapimento di Howard, la sequenza dell'asta) e nel rapporto fra Howard e il mondo di vip con cui entra in contatto, guardando con referenze il cestista Kevin Garnett o il rapper Weeknd (entrambi nella parte di sé stessi) ma anche sfidandoli dall'alto (o dal basso) della sua sfacciataggine. Scandito dalle musiche ipnotiche di Daniel Lopatin (conosciuto anche come Oneohtrix Point Never e già autore dello score di Good Times) costruito attorno agli spostamenti frenetici di Howard, alle sue conversazioni sguaiate, alle sue disavventure che esplodono in improvvisi picchi di violenza, aperto da una sequenza in una miniera etiope a cui segue un flusso di immagini lisergiche che dalle viscere della Terra conduce (letteralmente) alle viscere del protagonista, Uncut Gems - cioè gemma grezza, non tagliata e forse senza valore come la vita di Howard - è un trip visivo e sensoriale che per più di due ore conduce nel caos di uomo irresistibilmente e stupidamente attratto dall'azzardo e dalla sfida a sé stesso («Questo è il bello di scommettere, cazzo: io, un fan dei Knicks, che punta tutto sui Celtics. ». Come ammesso dagli stessi registi, per cui «ogni film precedente è stato una tappa d'avvicinamento a questo film», Uncut Gems è la summa del cinema dei fratelli Safdie, mai così bravi a richiamare i loro modelli (i soliti Cassavetes e Scorsese, qui produttore esecutivo, ma anche PT Anderson, James Gray o il JC Chandor di 1981: Indagine a New York) mai così precisi nel raccontare il legame fra un personaggio e il suo ambiente; mai così attenti, ancora, a legare le loro vicende paradossali alla realtà (la straordinaria scena finale ruota attorno alla gara 7 delle semifinali di Conference della NBA del 2012 tra Boston Celtics e Philadelphia 76ers. E finalmente maturi abbastanza da allargare il loro sguardo da un mondo di disadattati e sconfitti a un'intera città, o un intero paese, in perenne movimento, violento, spietato, grottesco, disperatamente legato al denaro.  Sei d'accordo con Roberto Manassero? The film begins with a meditation involving the commune members, which appears to be no more than 10 people. Though they discuss their intentional, generous way of being, they also make an ambiguous statement about outsiders being unhappy with their way of life. It is clear that Anahita is not as invested in the practice as those around her, and this uninterested, reserved demeanor remains constant through the entire film. Later in the day, she finds her unstable mother with a man she used to date and his teenage son, Theo, who steps into the frame with obvious charm, drawing the attention of Anahita. Frustrated that her mother has invited them to a ceremony that night, Anahita goes on with her daily responsibilities, which include taking care of her sisters child, Ocean. Later, when the family questions Anahitas virginity and joke with her about the attractive stranger, the sexual nature by which the film is driven surfaces. After drinking a seductive herbal elixir, the introspective, self-betterment ceremony becomes something like a sexual revelry, and her best friend sleeps with Theo. The conflict of desire and denial within Anahita becomes apparent. The family dynamics are complicated, revolving around Anahitas sister as she travels between the commune and the city, and Anahitas mother, who is uncomfortably sexual and uniquely detached from reality. A conflict between her mother and sister grows as her sisters desire to get off Spiral Farm and move her son to the city actualizes—however, Anahita ends up following in her footsteps with dreams of moving to the city to pursue dancing. Neither her sister nor her mother believe that she is capable of leaving, and the internal debate that arises when she overhears this in a conversation, mixed with the navigation of her feelings for Theo, drives the rest of the film. What begins as a perceived romance in the intentionally compassionate community becomes convoluted with her mothers instability and the deterioration of her sisters commitment to Spiral Farm. When Theo finds out that Anahita dances, he takes her into the city for an audition. They decide to spend the night in a motel, but what initially begins as a pursuit is returned with a cold, unassuming distance. This sort of climax without any real resolution repeats, taking varying forms, throughout the film. Director Alec Tibaldi parallels the intimacy of the story with the way it is captured. Focusing each shot with undeniable intention and stretching time with a great deal of silence, the film is experienced as both a work of art and a candid view of Anahitas life as she grows and hurts. Working with specially curated music, Tibaldi builds a soundscape perfectly matched with the eerie moments and the dreamy. At times, the evolution of relationships felt unnatural, however, this was also fitting to the vibe of the film in its resting place of a commune. Tibaldi captures an odd simplicity in bad faith, and works to uncover the paradoxical elements of an attempted utopia.
